2023 TAC Transgender Day of Remembrance: A Community Gathering and Lighting Ceremony
The City of Los Angeles Transgender Advisory Council (TAC) invites you to the 2023 TAC Transgender Day of Remembrance: A Community Gathering and Lighting Ceremony to celebrate and honor the joy, legacy, and lives of the people we’ve lost in the transgender, gender-diverse, and intersex (TGI) communities.
Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is an annual commemoration every November 20th in honor of the transgender, gender-diverse, and intersex (TGI) individuals who tragically lost their lives due to anti-transgender hate and violence.
TDOR's origins trace back to 1999 when transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith started a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a Black transgender woman whose life was tragically taken in 1998. This vigil, which sought to remember all transgender individuals who had fallen victim to violence since Rita Hester's passing, marked the inception of a significant tradition that eventually evolved into the annual observance known as the Transgender Day of Remembrance.
